Sabermetric Basketball

Wednesday, March 26th, 2003

John Hollinger from SportsIllustrated.com explains his “expected wins” theory, which sounds suspiciously like Bill James’ pythagorean method for calculating expected wins in baseball. Both attempt to show how winning percentage correlates with point differential–and they’re surprisingly accurate.

Twin-Credible

Tuesday, March 25th, 2003

Ken Rosenthal takes his seat next to Peter Gammons on the Twins bandwagon with a two-part article on why they’ll win it all this year.

The South American Newspaper Coup Continues

Tuesday, March 25th, 2003

After having my picture published in Costa Rica’s La Nacion during my trip there two weeks ago (I only have a link to the story–no picture), I have now been quoted in Brazil’s Folha newspaper. And yet the Boston Globe still refuses to give me a column!

Bristol’s Best and Brightest

Tuesday, March 25th, 2003

Want to compare your NCAA Tournament picks to those of the experts? Here’s a link to the ESPN company pool. My only goal at this point is to beat Hunter S. Thompson.

Another Boston University Student Who Left Without Graduating And Then Found Fame In TV and Movies

He joins Jason Alexander and Rosie O’Donnell.

Signs That There Is Too Much Information Out There

Monday, March 24th, 2003

1) A film major who graduated with me and had never heard of Michael Moore before last night, and
2) A Minnesotan writer who hadn’t heard of Tim O’Brien or his works (most notably “The Things They Carried“).
3) A college student and self-proclaimed music fan who had never heard of Shakira.

On the other hand, I didn’t know how to pronounce “deus ex machina” until I (finally) saw “Adaptation.” last week. So much info, so little time.

With the Twins

Monday, March 24th, 2003

Peter Gammons effectively picks the Twins to win the American League pennant through the end of the decade. While I’m happy for my hometown team’s national press, remember that Gammons is essentially a baseball-themed gossip columnist.

Close Call

Monday, March 24th, 2003

Despite the world’s growing geopolitical troubles, the NFL Europe season will start on time . Finally, we can all sleep at night.

Boo-Birds of Unhappiness

Saturday, March 22nd, 2003

What’s one of the few things lamer than booing another country’s national anthem before a hockey game? Copying the idiotic behavior in response, as Atlanta Thrashers fans did last night. Once again, US Citizens show the rest of the world our classless side. “They did it first” is no excuse. Thanks, Atlanta fans!

Billionaire Broad Confirms Interest in Buying Dodgers

Friday, March 21st, 2003

That was the headline to this article, which reports on Mr. Eli Broad’s desire to purchase the L.A. team. But is there anyone else who, like me, thought at first that it was derogatorily referring to an exceedingly wealthy woman?
